Industrial Talk and Election Event

Program:

  1.  Talk by Dr. Dennis Janka (ABB Corporate Research)

Title: "Industrial scheduling problems: Examples, challenges, and practical approaches"

    Abstract:
In this talk, we first give an overview of ABB corporate research, its mission, structure and research areas. Then we discuss scheduling, a problem that is relevant in many of ABB's business areas. Scheduling problems arise in various industrial applications, for example in chemical processes, logistics, steel manufacturing, or mining. To be of practical use, a scheduling method must be integrated into the overall manufacturing automation process. This brings certain challenges with regards to modeling, response time, and handling of uncertainty. We present a flexible, constructive heuristic that is suitable for a wide range of applications and argue why speed is sometimes more important than optimality.

  2. Election of the Executive Board of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM
  3. Get-Together with beer and pizza (and also non-alcoholic beverages)!

We are looking forward to seeing you!

Best regards,
The Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM Officers
