SIAM Annual Meeting 2018 (AN18)

The SIAM Annual Meeting 2018 (AN18) was held during July 9-13 in Portland (OR), USA. It was jointly held with the SIAM Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science (MS18), the SIAM Conference on Applied Mathematics Education (ED18) and the SIAM Workshop on Network Science (NS18). All conferences were located at the Oregon Convention Center.

SIAM designed a program specifically for students, so-called Student Days. The program included career fairs, several tutorials, talks given by undergraduate students, meetings with invited speakers who shared their experience and much more. Furthermore, there were activities during the student days specifically for the SIAM student chapter representatives. This included a breakfast, where all student representatives and the current SIAM Leadership met and had valuable discussions about the current state of the student chapters and shared ideas for new activities. Furthermore, selected representatives were presenting their research projects.

Many talks about interesting topics were given during the conferences - in fact too many, so that I had to choose which talks I was going to attend. A highlight was the talk given by Charles F. Van Loan who introduced a funny little problem which he then tackled with the real Schur decomposition and the singular value decomposition. It is always astonishing how a decomposition can give a huge insight into the structure of a problem. If you are interested, then you can find his talk here [1]. Furthermore a panel discussion with Christine Darden, who was one of the human computers at NASA and portrayed in the book "Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly, was very exciting and rewarding.

So much more could be said about the Annual Meeting in Portland, but foremost I would like to emphasize that getting in touch with other students (student representatives) and researchers was a great experience and I can definitely recommend this meeting to everyone.

Lastly, I want to thank SIAM and HGS MathComp for their financial support.
