Report on the Workshop

Five doctoral students of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University founded the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM at the end of 2011. In order to build a network between young scientists worldwide, they organized a joint student workshop with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology in Hanoi, Vietnam. With generous support of SIAM, IWR and the Heidelberg Graduate School HGS MathComp, the event was a great success, strengthening the IWR's deeply-rooted German-Vietnamese cooperation, particularly on student level.

 

The workshop “Model-based Parameter Estimation & Optimum Experimental Design” was jointly organized by the School of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology in Vietnam, and the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM, which has just recently been founded at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University in Germany by Dörte Beigel, Holger Diedam, Kathrin Hatz, Dennis Janka and Andreas Sommer. “Our common goal is to strengthen the IWR's deeply-rooted German-Vietnamese cooperation, particularly on student level” explains Dennis Janka. IWR's cooperation with Vietnam is, for example, also reflected in the joint conference series on High Performance Scientific Computing, which took place in Hanoi this year for the 5th time.

In March 2012, three members of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM's Executive Board, Holger Diedam, Kathrin Hatz and Dennis Janka, traveled to Hanoi for organizing a two-day workshop tailored for Master's and PhD students at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. “One of the three main goals of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM is to foster international cooperations between young scientists – and this is exactly what we do here“ states Kathrin Hatz. The first day started with a warm welcome from Le Cuong, vice dean of the host institution, and Nguyen Quang Thuan, head of the department of applied mathematics.

The scientific program of the workshop consisted of talks by students and lecturers of both institutions. Five talks were given by the Heidelberg students with a focus on numerical methods for parameter estimation and optimum experimental design that are major areas of research at the IWR in Heidelberg. Lecturers and students from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology also took the opportunity to present their current research from different areas of optimal control during another five talks. The workshop concluded with a lively debate among the more than 30 participants following up discussions during coffee and lunch breaks.

Apart from discussing research, many new contacts have been established. Holger Diedam is excited: “It's great to receive such a warm welcome and to meet and discuss with so many interested fellow students.” The workshop was a great success in connecting young scientists from different countries.
