Public Symposium

Cooperation between Industry and University

A short summary of the Symposium

The SIAM Student Chapter at University of Heidelberg held the SIAM symposium “University meets Industry – First hand experience” on the May 15th, 2014. The Symposium featured talks of Dr. Josef R. Wünsch, Senior Vice President for Formulation, Mathematics, Modelling & Technology Incubation at BASF SE and Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Hans Georg Bock, managing director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR).

Guest speaker Dr. Josef R. Wünsch explained by means of several industrial problems areas in which mathematics is applied at BASF. Due to the complex nature of certain unique problems BASF tackles such topics in cooperation with research facilities. He showed interesting examples that illustrate the success of such cooperations and identified pitfalls.

Professor Bock gave his insights of the topic and explained the advantages and disadvantages of such a cooperation from the perspective of the university.

Afterwards the audience was invited to join the chapter board and the speakers for a reception with food and beverages and some fruitful discussion. Both speakers stayed longer than planned to answer the many questions of the students in the audience and also to discuss some joint, future projects.

The new members of the executive board have been glad that their first self-planned event ran so smoothly. Felix Lenders, who chaired the symposium, was very happy in the end: “I haven't expected such a big audience. I'm glad that there was enough food!“
